Carbon sink register

The first ISO certified compensation service in finland. The Carbon Sink Register is a compensation service for emissions. It was designed for compensators and forest owners who wish to increase additional carbon sinks and sell them for compensation. The Carbon Sink Register is the first Finnish compensation service with an ISO certificate. The certificate is an indication of responsible and transparent actions. (ISO 14064:2-2019).

Hiilinielurekisteri.fi functions like an online shop

  • You can purchase compensations.
  • Forest owners can add their forest to the register and allow for their additional carbon sinks to be sold as compensation.
  • The service matches the sold additional carbon sink with the purchased compensation.

A compensation service for businesses and private customers

Non-reducible emissions can be compensated in the Carbon Sink Register. This way, you will also support the creation, growth and conservation of additional carbon sinks in Finnish forests.

  • Additional carbon sinks are created from thinned commercial forests that are fertilized with wood ash.
  • Ash fertilizers increase tree growth by 20–50%.
  • Additional growth is an additional carbon sink that binds carbon dioxide from the air per the emission compensation within 15–20 years.

The compensation purchaser chooses whether they want to compensate the annual emissions based on the number of people or tons of CO2.

The compensator is assigned a suitable compensation forest for 15 or 20 years, until the amount of carbon dioxide equal to the compensation has been absorbed from the air. The service ensures that emission credits are nullified as they are sold, and they can be sold only once.

We regularly visit the compensation forests to measure carbon binding in the trees and to confirm that the trees exist.

The Carbon Sink Register makes ash fertilization profitable

Natural and effective ash fertilization of forests is profitable for forest owners growing carbon sinks.

Compensation – the binding of carbon dioxide equal to the amount of emissions – occurs in additional carbon sinks in our forests, during additional growth enabled by ash fertilization. The forest owner adds forest areas suitable for compensation into the Carbon Sink Register by signing a Carbon Sink Contract.

The forest owner will maintain their compensation forest for 15 or 20 years according to their choice. The forest owner will be reimbursed for conserving the compensation forest.

A conservative estimate of additional growth in a year on peat soil is 3 m3 per hectare and on mineral soil 1,4 m3 per hectare. The effect of ash fertilization lasts for up to 40 years.

Compensation

  • Reduces carbon footprint.
  • Supports creation and growth of carbon sinks.
  • Is a reliable and transparent form of environmental responsibility.
  • Supports Finnish forest owners, the value chain in forest and wood industries, employment, and circular economy.
